The big and pink electric vehicle (EV) concept car unveiled by Jaguar in Miami this week has, to put it mildly, divided opinion. However, the automotive sector's transition to EVs has hit some bigger bumps in the road than a row over aesthetics at one brand.

Manufacturers have blamed regulation for job losses and missed targets, while the Trump election victory in the US has made the global industry picture more uncertain just as competition from China threatens to overwhelm Western producers.
