Are household savings holding back the economy?

In the years before the pandemic, households typically saved about 6 per cent of their disposable income. Then Covid hit. As shops, restaurants and hotels closed for business, the ratio soared to 27 per cent, as the chart below shows. The economy may have reopened, but things still haven’t gone back to normal: almost five years later, the savings ratio still stands at 11 per cent.
